A truly sad day. Riding this afternoon, I know it's what JMC would have been doing if he was here today, its pouring here. Miserable weather for a sad, sad day. 10 years already? Amazing. I can remember seeing it on the news, like it was yesterday, cliche or not.

When i first started getting into mountain biking 12 years ago the mags were mostly all full of the American and European stars, then along came Jason it was good to see some brit up there and sponsored by specialized
just shows we could cut it ,i believe that Jason certainly opened a lot of doors for the UK downhill crowd

I still remember reading the story in Cycling Weekly about the accident. Every week I would look forward to seeing what JMC had won and how he was getting on in the World Cup. That week it was not the news I expected. The big picture was not of a glorious win.
Looking back now and seeing how well the Brits are performing on the world circuit today, is a lasting tribute for the hard work that Jason and his Dad went to, just to race. If you need inspiration for almost anything, just find a video of JMC getting 2nd place in the Kamikaze Eliminator. Amazing.

Racing at the Eston Hills NEMBA back in the early '90s Jason was standing by the bombhole near the bottom of the course shouting encouragement to everyone who passed, willing them to catch the person infront (back in the days of 2-up starts for DH races).
It made my day being encouraged by my idol and if it wasn't for Jason I probably wouldn't be riding today, with more and more enthusiasm as the years pass.
Still very much in our thoughts and an inspiration.

I was not only lucky to meet Jason around the circuit we also ran races he would star in, and a star he was, that is not to decry the brilliance of Steve Pete and others but this text box is dedicated to Jason. Just how strong would the British Scene be today if Jason had been here. At the moment the UK is ranked No 3 DH Nation at the UCI, given the general indifference the sport gets here and varying venues few of whihc match up with world class courses I for one am not going to believe that Jason has not been party to making that success possible over the last 10 years and his influence will keep us going for a further 10

I'm also stunned that it's been ten years. I still vividly remember hearing the news by email in the grotty office Australian Mountain Bike magazine was in back then. I'm not ashamed to admit I cried. Not because I knew Jason especially well, but because there are people who should NOT be taken young, and Jason was one of them. The injustice...
My fondest memory is of sitting on a pile of gravel for about 20 minutes waiting for Jason to come round on the next lap of a NEMBA cross country race near Catterick in 1991. Jason had been showboating on a small jump each lap and Jim and I sat next to each other, cameras ready, to capture the action. That was my first and only magazine cover shot.

Jason has always been my ultimate MTB hero, since I started riding in 89 I followed Jasons career as a true fan. I even met him and still have the signed t shirt from bicycle expo!
A charming guy in person and an inspiration on a bike.

10 years wow, I remember walking into whsmiths and flicking though a copy of Mountain Biking Uk, reading the usual JMC story and then noticing a pic of him in the news section, and below it the news of his death. i must have read it 3 times before it sank in.
my wife still cant even watch the old dirt video now..
and I cant quite believe at the age of 36 I'm sat here when i should be working, with tears in my eye's over a Guy I never actually met but whose career I followed avidly in those early days of MTB, If ever there was someone destined for greatness then it was JMC.
I was up racing the car at Knockhill recently, staying with some friends, and the conversation turned to MTB racing, as one of the lads was off racing at geneva i think, and it wasnt long before JMC came up.
Its often said that Sir Stirling Moss was the greatest motor racer never to win the world championship and I think the same is true of JMC... Simply the best..
Im rambling now so I'll sign off, and get the p7 out of the shed for a thrash

Man 10 years!!
Still brings a tear to my eye all these years later.
JMC was my idol back then when I was 16 and every ride to this day i dedicate what i do to him.

Just wanted to add my bit again as someone who didnt know Jason personally he was a great insperation to me. I did alot of mountain biking from 92 - 02 having to stop after getting a bad back injury. I remember having to have everything JMC had like the OGK helmet and the RTS. I can remember just going to watch the Grundig in Plymouth just to watch jase ride with those huge bars and bag going down the end downhill of the course so much faster then the xcountry riders It was there a year later I was racing having just heard of JMC death. I now sit here awaiting a new bike to arrive so i can get riding again 3 years after never being on a bike and have put on the weight to many JMC big macs. So when I get back up the hills here down in the south west JMC will be with me. Thanks JMC still have that signed poster on my wall and always will. Also time to get a new tatoo and now I the time is right to get it I think you can all guess what it is. Martin Owen

I remember running out of the house in tears and in complete disbelief. I didn't know Jason as friend but was lucky enough to spend a week with Jason and Jim in a house in Switzerland in 93.
Jason was someone so special and the week with Jase and Jim is something I'll never forget. I was an inexperienced junior rider then and Jason provided me with tips; but more importantly Jason was the guy that everyone wanted to be like and I aspired to be like Jase.
I'm amazed that we are now 10 years on. I posted the message below on CIX 10 years ago.. the words "NEVER be Forgotten" were in Bold - I'm glad those words still ring true, Jason will never be forgotten.

Wow as eveyone's saying 10 YEARS ALREADY.
JMC was such a great part of the mountain biking scene back then and everyone i knew aspired to be like him. He truely was a great guy, a great rider and a great personality for the sport.
I grew up with mountain biking in the late eighties and still ride today and every now and again i just keep thinking of the great times that me and my mates had at race events every year especially the Malvern Classic all of those coloured anodised bits and titanium, Ringle and Grafton parts that everyone craved and the new arrival of club roost riser bars, mmm those were the days ........
Sorry guys just a bit of nostalgia for you all

10 yrs ,can t believe it,i used to ride with jase at whickham thorns over in gateshead quite a bit,he was a true gent,he alway s had time for other s and all the kids loved him,i ve seen him ride mtb s,road bike s,cross bike s and track bikes,he could of raced any of these at the highest level and would of became world and olympic champion such was his disire..he was taken from us far too early but his spirit still inspire s us all...we ll all meet again one day,i look forward to it!!!!

Fond memories remain of Jason and the Salsa/MBUK team at NEMBAs in 1992 and 1993, when we all rode XC, DH, dual slalom and trials all on the same bike! I've got a great picture of Jason and Sophie at the top of the DH at Hamsterley, complete with A La Cartes and Mag 21s :)
Sadly missed, but I like to think his legacy is one of the great strength in British donwhilling and 4X that we see at the moment....

Until 6 hours ago i had never heard of Jason McRoy but i've just come come back from a long bike ride starting and finishing in Huddersfield. My route took me onto the Woodhead Pass where i passed Jason's shrine. Unfortunately i often go past road side memorials, i guess its a sad fact of life bit there was something different about Jason's. Having gone past at a fair speed something made me do a u-turn and go back and have a proper look.
I guess it was probably the fact that the memorial was so well maintained and had a bike frame and trophies propped up against the fence. Who ever is responsible for maintaining it should pat themselves on the back. I stopped for a few minutes and looked at the photos and trophies and was really touched as the sun reflected off the trophies. I thought about it all the way back home and was curious as to who Jason was and ultimately what could of happened to him on that stretch of road. This led me to your web-site which is a credit to Jason's parents as is the shrine. I think what you have done has helped to perpetuate Jason's memory to those outside his family and friends which is a really good thing.
I will be having a drink for Jason tonight and will say hello to him every time i pass his memorial

Hello, all,
I was a late-comer to the exploits of Jason McRoy and am not even a very adventurous stunt-cyclist.
But I want you all to know that from what I've seen (from for example the "Sprung" videos) and heard (from word of mouth) that I view Jason McRoy as something special in that particular field.
For a long time I didn't know anything about high-performance cycling; then, in I believe it was in 1998, a good friend of mine introduced me to "Sprung", and footage of a cheeky-grinned, blonde-haired maniac performing one-wheeled, up-hill turns on a bicycle.
I've seen many tricks on many bikes since then, but the name "Jason McRoy" has stuck with me ever since, and is well-known to people outwith my normal circle. I enjoy cycling normally, but there are people who I know I know who can bunny-hop on their back-wheels from one bike-stand to the next, people who are THAT good, who still speak his name only in awe.
I speak as an outsider - Jason McRoy has left his mark. He did nothing in vain; whenever extreme cycling comes up in discussion, as it so often does, given the company I keep, it is a rare conversation that does not mention his name.
Whatever fans of Jason read this, be encouraged.
Whatever relatives of Jason read this, be proud.
Me and my friends wil take our tales of Jason McRoy into 2009 and beyond.
To the parents of Jason McRoy, you gave the world a fine standard and a wonderful gift.

I have just got back on my bike after a five year lay off, moving to Spain and having a child etc...
It has really got me thinking again about the old days and JMC.
I grew up in the north east and am just a year older than Jason, I remember me and my friends talking about him at the BMX track in Cramlington, he was this little kid with more talent in one leg than we all had put together, as I grew up and started downhill racing, JMC was becoming a huge star.
I followed his career, I've got the tatoo to prove it, kept in touch with what he was doing and spoke to people who knew him at bike shops in the north east.
I went to his funeral............
I really believe that he was a special person and I will never forget him.
I found out about his death in a newsagents in newcastle, I saw his picture on the front cover of the evening chronicle and thought, wow what has he won now, I cried when I picked it up and read the headline.
But I will remember him every time I stick my leg out whilst taking a gravel covered corner far too fast for a man approaching 40.
